Here are all the necessities for Robbie McIntosh’s two-day workshop during the Vada Photo Festival.
As the good “goat” photographer that I am I think this is my first or second photography workshop…I don’t have many memories (the virtual ones online I didn’t count)
I start at 10.00 am at the Ordigno Theater in Vada but already at 9.30 am there in front, but I am not the only one, Robbie is also already there together with the organizers and the first participants, so given the large advance ,we take the opportunity to go for a coffee and to let us visit Giuseppe Garibaldi Square (where I think they shot the Back to the Future trilogy, but they don’t want to admit it), the main square and the hub of Vada also for some of the exhibits of the festival.

Ecco tutto l’occorrente per il workshop di due giorni di Robbie McIntosh durante il Vada Photo Festival.
Da buon fotografo “caprone” che sono penso sia il mio primo o secondo workshop fotografico.. non ho molte ricordanze (quelli virtuali online non li ho contati)
Inizio ore 10,00 al Teatro dell’Ordigno di Vada ma già alle 9,30 sono li davanti, ma non sono il solo, anche Robbie è già presente insieme agli organizzatori e i primi partecipanti, quindi visto il largo anticipo ,approfittiamo per andare a prenderci un caffè e per farci visitare piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi (dove secondo me hanno girato la trilogia di Ritorno al Futuro, ma non lo vogliono ammettere), piazza principale e fulcro di Vada anche per alcune delle opere esposte del festival.

We head back toward the Theater and this new experience finally begins.
Robbie introduces himself and breaks the ice by saying that he has not prepared any set list for this workshop (I would be, besides fainting, terrified at the thought of having to speak for almost 5 hours without having an idea, then on a stage and with an audience), he tells us that he is a technical engineer and photographer by passion, living in Naples since the age of 8, photographing since his youth remaining faithful to film, also learning all the printing processes in both black and white and color with wonder.
I met Robbie through his instagram page, I was impressed from the start by his integration with the people he photographed at the various Neapolitan beaches, but as he also says it was not at all easy to get accepted and gain trust, it took about 10 years to get to know them all and become part of those families.
With the help of a TV screen, he shows us a selection of his unpublished photographs brought for the occasion and others he already knew and knew through various social media.
Each of his photos is full of details and anecdotes, where it was easy to find ourselves talking about photographers of all eras, sports, music, artists, musicians, actors related to that shot enriching its value and making us appreciate them more and more.
Even after lunch, with an inevitable fritto misto on our stomachs, time flies and we are finally ready and charged to venture to the long-awaited Spiagge Bianche to take some photos all together, we mount the free shuttle bus that from Vada takes us directly there in less than 10 minutes, I would say great service and unthinkable for other Italian location

Torniamo verso il Teatro e finalmente inizia questa nuova esperienza.
Robbie si presenta e rompe il ghiaccio dicendo che non si è preparato alcuna scaletta per questo workshop (io sarei, oltre ad essere svenuto, terrorizzato al pensiero di dover parlare per quasi 5 ore senza avere un’idea, poi su un palco e con del pubblico), ci racconta che è un ingegnere tecnico e fotografo per passione, vive a Napoli dall’età di 8 anni, fotografa fin da giovane rimanendo fedele alla pellicola, imparando a meraviglia anche tutti i processi di stampa sia in bianco e nero che a colori.
Ho conosciuto Robbie tramite la sua pagina instagram, sono rimasto colpito fin da subito il suo integrarsi con le persone da lui fotografate nelle varie spiagge napoletane, ma come dice anche lui non e’ stato per niente facile farsi accettare e acquistare fiducia, ci sono voluti circa 10 anni per imparare a conoscerli tutti e a far parte di quelle famiglie.
Con l’aiuto di uno schermo tv ci mostra una selezione di sue fotografie inedite portate per l’occasione e altre invece già note e conosciute tramite i vari social.
Ogni sua foto è ricca di dettagli e aneddoti, dove era facile ritrovarsi a parlare di fotografi di ogni epoca, sport, musica, artisti, musicisti, attori legati a quello scatto arricchendone il valore e facendole apprezzare sempre di più.
Anche dopo il pranzo, con un immancabile fritto misto sullo stomaco, il tempo vola e finalmente siamo pronti e carichi per avventurarsi alle tanto attese Spiagge Bianche per fare un pò di foto tutti insieme, montiamo sul bus navetta gratuito che da Vada ci porta direttamente lì in meno di 10 minuti, direi ottimo servizio e impensabile per altre località italiane!

We finally put our feet on the white beach of Rosignano Solvay, Robbie was looking forward to it, he had heard so much about it because of its fine, white sand and also the Caribbean effect water, but he was not so much aware of the Solvay sodium carbonate factory that can be seen in the background of the beach and that thanks to the discharges into the sea creates all this.
Like madmen at large we slalom between umbrellas, towels and tents set up on the spot, all armed with cameras we go in search of some situation we can immortalize, asking in some cases to take some photos of some interesting subject who has lent himself for the occasion.
We walk and photograph for quite a while until we get to the ditch (the one that gets the water from the sea to cool the Solvay plant) where we find a train of kids of all ages quietly diving in, the sun is beginning to set, it has been almost 2 hours since we arrived and it is also time to say goodbye and go back, so we have time to make a selection of the photos taken that we can show the next day to analyze and investigate them further.
On the way back I ask Robbie how he started selling his photographs, because I would also like to and would like to start offering my own(science fiction, but I try), he replies by telling me that for him it was simple, some of his photos caught the attention of some music bands and record labels and they didn’t hesitate to ask to be able to buy them for their album covers, from there it all started and to this day he continues to sell them.
What can I say, all I need to do is find the courage and a good printer from digital and that’s it!

Finalmente mettiamo i piedi sulla spiaggia bianca di Rosignano Solvay, Robbie non vedeva l’ora, ne aveva sentito parlare tanto per via della sua sabbia finissima e bianca e anche per l’acqua con effetto Caraibi, ma non era tanto a conoscenza della fabbrica Solvay di carbonato di sodio che si vede sullo sfondo della spiaggia e che grazie agli scarichi in mare crea tutto questo.
Come pazzi in libertà facciamo slalom tra ombrelloni, asciugamani e tende allestite sul momento, tutti armati di macchina fotografica andiamo in cerca di qualche situazione da poter immortalare, chiedendo in alcuni casi di poter fare qualche foto a qualche soggetto interessante e che si è prestato per l’occasione.
Camminiamo e fotografiamo per un bel pò fino ad arrivare al fosso (quello che prende l’acqua del mare per raffreddare l’impianto di Solvay) dove troviamo un treno di ragazzi di ogni età che si tuffa in tutta tranquillità, il sole sta iniziando a calare, sono passate quasi 2 ore da quando siamo arrivati ed è anche giunto il momento di salutarci e tornare indietro, cosi abbiamo il tempo per fare una selezione delle foto scattate da poter mostrare il giorno dopo per analizzarle e approfondire.
Durante il ritorno chiedo a Robbie come ha iniziato a vendere le sue fotografie, perché anche io avrei piacere e vorrei iniziare a proporre le mie(fantascienza, ma ci provo), mi risponde dicendo che per lui è stato semplice, alcune delle sue foto hanno attirato l’attenzione di alcune band musicali e etichette discografiche e non hanno esitato a chiedere di poterle acquistare per le loro copertine degli album, da lì è iniziato tutto e tutt’ora continua a venderle.
Che dire, mi rimane solo di trovare il coraggio e un buono stampatore dal digitale per le mie fotografie e il gioco è fatto!

We arrived at the second day, with great enthusiasm we analyze the chosen photos of each of us, and it is interesting to see how in some cases the usual photographed subject can turn out to be a fantastic shot for some of us, because it is captured in a more important moment or expression or from a ‘better angle either because of the light or the pose or the background cleaner and/or richer in other details.
Everyone’s participation in putting themselves out there and on display made the morning fly by but Robbie wants to delight us, before closing our meeting, with a photographic selection from a new project of his, also a long-term one, totally different from what we are used to seeing on his social media, where every image we view is accompanied by an important narrative, again the merit of great work, at the base, of storytelling.
We came to the end of the workshop, tears, shouting, crying, “let’s stay in touch” and “let’s write”… aware that it would never work we avoided all that, so with “calm, dignity and class” we said goodbye.

at this point, since I was at the beach, I took the opportunity to take one last walk on the beach armed with my camera, happy and 1000% charged in search of some more photos….

Siamo arrivati al secondo giorno, con grande entusiasmo analizziamo le foto scelte di ognuno di noi, ed è interessante vedere come in alcuni casi il solito soggetto fotografato possa risultare uno scatto fantastico per alcuni di noi, perché catturato in un momento o in un espressione più importante o da un’ angolazione migliore sia per la luce che per la posa o per lo sfondo più pulito e/o ricco di altri particolari.
La partecipazione di tutti nel mettersi in gioco e in mostra ha fatto volare la mattinata ma Robbie ci vuole deliziare, prima di chiudere il nostro incontro, con una selezione fotografica di un suo nuovo progetto, anche questo a lungo termine, totalmente diverso da quello che siamo abituati a vedere sui suoi social, dove ogni immagine che visualizziamo è accompagnata da un importante racconto, anche questo merito di un grande lavoro, alla base, di storytelling.
Siamo giunti alla fine del workshop, lacrime, grida, pianti, “rimaniamo in contatto” e “scriviamoci”… consapevoli che non avrebbe mai funzionato abbiamo evitato tutto ciò, quindi con “calma, dignità e classe” ci siamo salutati.
Ringrazio Robbie McIntosh e il team di Vada Photo Festival per questo incontro ravvicinato che mi ha permesso di stare a fianco e confrontarmi con Robbie e anche gli altri fotografi, arricchendo cosi il mio portfolio di esperienze e conoscenze fotografiche.

A questo punto, dato che mi trovavo al mare, ne ho approfittato per farmi un ultimo giro in spiaggia armato di macchina fotografica, contento e carico al 1000% alla ricerca di qualche altra foto..
