When was the last time you went to the beach in Viareggio?
In my case it jumps back several years, about 9 or 10 years from what I remember, but the calendar keeps running because no beach this time around either.
Courageous Miriam Magnolfi accompanied me on this photographic outing to the avanscoping of what Viareggio offers, Miriam is the one who is following me and helping with the texts of my book and also the selection of the photos together with Giacomo Doni.
We noticed right away that arriving at 2:30 p.m. under the much and hot August sun was not a great idea, also confirmed by the desert found along the entire waterfront promenade to the pier, where we finally meet some interesting people and situations even in the very small and only free beach crowded by a tide of people of all nationalities’ where they “shower” with sunscreen and those who want to sunbathe but without touching the sand.
Along the pier we meet groups of divers, perhaps Tunisians, who seeing me with my camera request, as has happened before, to take some pictures of them diving without then knowing what I will do with their pictures, on the rocks other people watching other people swimming in the sea, some fishermen hoping to catch some fish relying on legends of other fishermen who according to them in that precise spot caught the biggest fish and never caught it up to that moment.
Quando è stata l’ultima volta che sei andato in spiaggia a Viareggio?
Nel mio caso si fa un bel salto all’indietro di diversi anni, circa 9 o 10 anni da quel che ricordo, ma il calendario continua a scorrere perché anche a questo giro niente spiaggia.
La coraggiosa Miriam Magnolfi mi ha accompagnato in questa uscita fotografica alla avanscoperta di cosa propone Viareggio, Miriam è colei che mi sta seguendo e aiutando con i testi del mio libro e anche la selezione delle foto insieme a Giacomo Doni.
Abbiamo notato subito che arrivare alle 14,30 sotto il tanto e caldo sole di Agosto non è stata una una grandissima idea, conferma anche il deserto trovato lungo tutta la passeggiata lungomare fino al molo, dove finalmente si incontrano un po di persone e situazioni interessanti anche nella piccolissima e unica spiaggia libera affollata da una marea di persone di ogni nazionalità’ dove fanno la “doccia” con la crema solare e chi invece vuole prendere il sole ma senza toccare la sabbia.
Lungo il molo incontriamo gruppi di tuffatori, forse tunisini, che vedendomi con la macchina fotografica richiedono, come già capitato altre volte, di scattargli qualche foto mentre si tuffano senza poi sapere che cosa ne farò delle loro foto, sugli scogli altre persone che guardano altra gente che fa il bagno in mare, alcuni pescatori che sperano di prendere qualche pesce affidandosi a leggende di altri pescatori che a detta loro in quel punto preciso hanno preso il pesce più grande e mai pescato fino a quel momento.
finished the visit on the whole pier we return to the waterfront promenade passing by the Ferris wheel where we finally start to see some movement, someone has the latest version of Iphone with underwater case or is trying not to leave traces on the phone, better to remain in doubt, then there are those who are leaving the beach, who instead are preparing for a dip in the sea with donuts and flying unicorns while others are enjoying the shade of the palm trees waiting for the sunset.
terminata la visita su tutto il molo rientriamo verso la passeggiata del lungomare passando vicino la ruota panoramica dove finalmente si inizia a vedere un po di movimento, qualcuno ha l’ultima versione di Iphone con custodia subacquea o sta cercando di non lasciare tracce sul telefono, meglio rimanere nel dubbio, poi c’e’ chi sta lasciando la spiaggia, chi invece si prepara per un tuffo in mare con ciambelle e unicorni volanti mentre altri si godono l’ombra delle palme aspettando il tramonto.
Continuing along the various bathhouses more photos pop up where vacationers are enjoying the store windows, some are sporting colorful outfits in pure “beach” style, others are moving away from the beach to seek some shade, and then Eva from Milan who lent herself for a photo but would not tell me what her profession was or the reason for her visit to Viareggio.
Proseguendo lungo i vari bagni saltano fuori altre foto dove i villeggianti si godono le vetrine dei negozi, chi sfoggia outfit colorati in puro stile “mare”, altri si allontano dalla spiaggia per cercare un po di ombra e poi Eva di Milano che si e’ prestata per una foto ma non mi ha voluto dire quale fosse la sua professione o il motivo della sua visita a Viareggio.
The sun is setting, finally giving life to a Viareggio that I remembered as more active and alive.
We meet tourists grappling with backlit photos, those who take superhero photos with superheroes who have survived the heat, those who decide to head home after shopping, Sing is of few words, Indian from India without saying anything else enjoys the first breath of wind coming from the sea, then there are those who instead stroll with their dogs and more, others take advantage of Buffalmacco, the symbol of the Viareggio Carnival, to take an artistic photo and those who are already ready for the evening in total Pink in a completely pink bar.
After this long day I can say that Viareggio is added to my list of places to visit and photograph, colorful and full of people of all kinds, to be considered even in the winter time with the Carnival
Il sole sta calando dando finalmente vita a una Viareggio che mi ricordavo piu attiva e viva.
Incontriamo turisti alle prese con le foto controluce, chi si fotografa da supereroe con i supereroi sopravvissuti al caldo, chi decide di tornare verso casa dopo aver fatto shopping, Sing è di poche parole, indiano dell’India senza dire altro si gode il primo soffio di vento proveniente dal mare, poi c’e’ chi invece passeggia con i cani e non solo, altri approfittano di Buffalmacco, il simbolo del Carnevale di Viareggio, per farsi una foto artistica e chi invece è gia pronto per la serata in total Pink in un bar completamente rosa.
Dopo questa lunga giornata posso dire che Viareggio si aggiunge alla mia lista dei luoghi da visitare e fotografare, colorata e piena di persone di ogni genere, da prendere in considerazione anche nel periodo invernale con il Carnevale
