🇬🇧 🇮🇹
Sunday morning, 8.30 am, we start the day with the ceremony at the Pu Hua Si Buddhist Temple with all the lions and dragons inside.
At the end, the lions do their performance and then we all go out for the second day of ‘racing’ between companies and businesses, today along the main streets of Prato and then into the old town.
From the Temple we pass through Piazza Ciardi and reach Via Strozzi.
Here we first stop with a display of lions and dragons in a courtyard/square, which apparently has no name.
Some of the boys who flank the dragons are already ready with their backpacks open to collect everything that is taken by the dragons from the stalls offered by the businesses.
From here we set off again and head in the direction of Via Fabio Filzi, along the way we find the first business, formerly Prato Carni, where the dragons make their passage.
At last we take via Filzi, one of Prato’s main streets with a large number of shops run by the Chinese, we find gyms, phone shops, restaurants, grocery stores, fishmongers, supermarkets, clothing stores, the dragoons enter all those with the entrance adorned with red cloths and with the stalls offered, but today won’t be as easy as the previous day, the public is much more interested in taking something home from each stall as soon as the last dragon leaves the business, the tables dusted in less than ten seconds hinting at the doggedness on the stalls.
In the meantime the guys also refuel on the fly with the things provided by the traders, we pass by the Borgonuovo station where via Fabio Filzi meets via Pistoiese, the dragoons make figures in the middle of the roundabout, from here we make a U-turn to go straight towards the centre of Prato, but the road is still very long, about 2.5km.
We enter via Pistoiese, the crowd is growing, our friends with bicycles leading the way, they are always in front of everyone along with the armed forces, always checking that the firecrackers comply with the regulations for use in this context.
With two dragoons and two lions we move towards Macrolotto Zero, to pass a few activities and also arrive at the skate park, a meeting place for many of the young people.
We set off again towards the historical centre, reaching Porta Pistoiese.
Finally we reach the centre of Prato, we pass San Domenico, Piazza del Comune, Piazza San Francesco and reach the final stage of Piazza delle Carceri where there is the Emperor’s castle, here a band entertains until everyone arrives, lions, dragons and all the participants in costume.
Some dragons climb up the steps of the castle, others perform the last figures in the square together with the lions, the dancers make their entrance and everyone takes their place to listen to the mayor of Prato Matteo Biffoni and the consul of the Chinese community Wang Wengang wishing the new year, the year of the Dragon.
Once the ritual greetings and celebrations were over, all the young people returned to the Buddhist temple, parading again along the streets of the historic centre, passing also through Piazza del Duomo.
Arriving at the Buddhist temple, the dragons are put back in their places to finally pick up their chopsticks to eat a hot meal in peace.
Thus ends the second day and the Chinese New Year celebrations, we are officially in the Year of the Dragon.
