🇬🇧 🇮🇹
We are finally back to Chinese New Year, after a lot of postponements, here we are at one of the most important Chinese community celebrations in the city of Prato.
The start was scheduled for around 8.30 a.m. in Via Toscana in Prato’s industrial area; the weather did not seem to be on my side, but it gave some hope.
Let’s start by talking about the most important costumes of the parade, where we meet Wang, the president of the Buddhist Temple of Prato, followed by the boys dressed as nobles and emperors, and then a long queue forms with more than 100 boys wearing the various costumes typical of each Chinese region.
At the head of the parade are the forerunners with bicycles to make sure the way is clear for the lions and dragons, who meanwhile dance and perform before entering the various companies to bring good luck.
Every company is completely covered and decorated with red cloths both outside and inside.
In front of the entrance they placed very long strips of firecrackers, which are lit when the lions and dragons arrive to chase away evil spirits. Inside, they pre-prepared lavish banquets with drinks and delicacies offered mainly for the lions and dragons but which can only be taken by all after their passage.
After a tiring morning of running in and out of companies amidst deafening bangs and mouth-watering rewards, the guys stop for lunch, which is also strictly provided.
We all get together to rest and recharge our batteries as it has also started raining.
After a good lunch break, we are ready to get back into position, the groups with the various costumes organise themselves to take photos all together, the dragons are picked up for a warm-up, we stretch our backs and the last few seconds to eat a small portion of Nutella
Since the rain is easing up a bit, we immediately start running through the streets and into the businesses, and despite the uncertain weather, there is always some crowd to follow the Chinese New Year.
The first day has come to an end and we prepare for the second day along the streets of the centre of Prato and in the old town!
